TAMPA — A 15-year-old girl remained in critical condition Friday after she was shot in the chest with a handgun she had found in her home, deputies said.
Nailin Rodriguez was playing with the handgun in a bedroom of her Royal Oaks Apartments home, 7323 Solano Court, at about 8:40 p.m. Thursday when her mother's boyfriend entered the room, deputies said.
The man, who was not immediately identified, attempted to take the gun away from Rodriguez, deputies said. As he did so, the firearm went off, shooting Rodriguez in the chest.
She was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with critical wounds.
It was not immediately clear whom the gun belongs to. An investigation is continuing.
