TOWN 'N COUNTRY— A 15-year-old girl remained in critical condition Friday after she was shot in the chest with a handgun she found in her home, deputies said.
Nailin Rodriguez, 15, was playing with a handgun in a bedroom of her Royal Oaks Apartments home, 7323 Solano Court, at about 8:40 Thursday, when her mother's boyfriend entered the room, deputies said.
The man, who was not immediately identified, attempted to take the gun away from Rodriguez, deputies said. As he did so, the firearm went off, shooting Rodriguez in the chest.
She was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with critical wounds.
It was not immediately clear who the gun belongs to, officials said.
At the time of the shooting, there were two other children in the apartment — a 10-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl — as well as Rodriguez's mother. They were all in another room, deputies said.
An investigation is continuing.
